I am taking tomorrow off. I have had it *up to here* with issues with my name. I have to go in person to the shop fronts of half a dozen places, and I may as well make a day of it.
My mobile phone account has been suspended because they neglected to inform me that if the name on my account and the name on my credit card that I use to pay the account don’t match perfectly, then the account gets suspended. So even though I have been calling them every freaking month since I changed my name, because they didn’t tell me this they have finally just cancelled my goddamned account, even though I just paid a $180 bill.
Most of these companies I didn’t go to the shop front to set up my accounts with them, but will they let me change the name on the account over the phone? Nooo, can’t have that.
Fucking annoying, thats what it is.
I feel your pain, man. I have to write letters to a bunch of utilities who were happy to take my word for it when I opened the account, plus I have to write to a bunch of official people and say “My name is now Nicholas but I’m still female” thanks to my doctor
oh, i hear you. i’ve just given up on utilities, phone, etc. let them put it in whatever name they want. we’re paying the bills, so i don’t give a shit. i’ve just got my financial adviser (aunt!) to go through all the legal stuff, insurance, super, etc and find out exactly what they need for a name change, so that should be sorted soon. it’s such a pain in the arse.
[...] But one of them just popped up with a supportive comment on Ryan’s blog. [...]
And what else is really annoying is when you take the time to call and ask exactly what paperwork they need. You send it in and someone else then sends it back, with a totally different set of requirements. I’m researching what paperwork companies need and I can’t believe the inconsistencies I can get from person to person in the same company. That’s because you’re dealing with call centres in India and no one knows anything.

I recall when I changed my name (on my 18th birthday I changed my surname to my mother’s maiden name since I have no relationship with my father) vowing never to do it again and wondered how any woman could even consider changing her name to her husband’s name and that I would never do such a thing. Now, however, I can’t even remember what was so difficult about it! May your name change experience likewise fade and be forgotten!
Don’t tell the feminists, but I might even change my name when I get married. Sigh.
