And what else is really annoying is when you take the time to call and ask exactly what paperwork they need. You send it in and someone else then sends it back, with a totally different set of requirements. I'm researching what paperwork companies need and I can't believe the inconsistencies I can get from person to person in the same company. That's because you're dealing with call centres in India and no one knows anything.

@Nick Kiddle: Yeah, its stupid, and time consuming.

@nix Oh man, I wish I had an Aunt who doubles as a Financial Adviser. Or even an Financial Adviser who doubled as an AUNT!

oh, i hear you. i've just given up on utilities, phone, etc. let them put it in whatever name they want. we're paying the bills, so i don't give a shit. i've just got my financial adviser (aunt!) to go through all the legal stuff, insurance, super, etc and find out exactly what they need for a name change, so that should be sorted soon. it's such a pain in the arse.

I feel your pain, man. I have to write letters to a bunch of utilities who were happy to take my word for it when I opened the account, plus I have to write to a bunch of official people and say "My name is now Nicholas but I'm still female" thanks to my doctor :(

Last time I changed my name it was just a legality, because all my documents were in the name I was changing it TO, its just that it turned out my original paperwork wasn't actually legal.

This time though because I am changing it to a boy name, it seems extra complicated. One of the most annoying things is people keep wanting to transfer 'Ms [girl name]'s account' to Mr Ryan, rather than just changing the name on the account. Maybe I should just let them? It would wipe out any bad credit I have, after all! Ha!

I recall when I changed my name (on my 18th birthday I changed my surname to my mother's maiden name since I have no relationship with my father) vowing never to do it again and wondered how any woman could even consider changing her name to her husband's name and that I would never do such a thing. Now, however, I can't even remember what was so difficult about it! May your name change experience likewise fade and be forgotten!

Don't tell the feminists, but I might even change my name when I get married. Sigh.
